Information for voters in the party election in Reykjavík
Party elections in Reykjavík will take place on January 24, 2026.
This is a binding internal party election for the top six places on the Reykjavík candidate list for Samfylkingin. A paired list system will be used, ensuring gender equality in each pair of candidates. The election will be conducted electronically on January 24, 2026.
All party members (not supporters) who are legally domiciled in Reykjavík and have reached the age of 16 are eligible to vote.
Voting will take place electronically on Saturday, January 24, from 00:00 to 18:00. A link to the ballot will be published on the party’s website and sent by email to those registered in the electoral roll.
To ensure accessibility, election assistance will be available at Hallveigarstígur 1 on election day from 10:00 to 18:00, as well as by phone through the party office at 414 2200. Arrangements will be made for voters who do not have electronic ID to cast their vote in person using the electronic voting system.
- The right to vote in the party elections is reserved for members of Samfylkingin with legal residence in Reykjavík who have reached the age of 16 on election day and have registered with the party before the closing of the electoral register, 22 January at 23:59. The electoral register shall close 24 hours before the election begins.
- Registered supporters do not have the right to vote.
- Citizenship does not affect eligibility to vote in the party election.
- Those who meet the requirements to be a member of the Samfylking – and have a legal residence in Reykjavík and are 16 years of age have the right to vote in the primary elections, regardless of citizenship.
- The election is held electronically at xs.is. The voter logs into the voting system with electronic ID. The voter fills out the ballot by ranking the candidates in 1st to 6th place. The voter must rank at least the first four places for the vote to be valid.
- To return a blank ballot, the voter checks the box "Return blank".
- The voter can change their vote until the end of the election. Then the last vote cast will be valid.
- If a voter has problems with the voting system, the election board can be contacted by email at kjorstjorn.xsrvk@gmail.com or by phone at 414-2200.
- In order to ensure accessibility to the elections, there will be election assistance on Hallveigarstígur on election day from 10:00 am as well as by phone at the party office. A solution will be offered for people who do not have electronic ID cards to vote in person through the electronic voting system.

- Students in the Nordic countries who previously had their legal residence in Reykjavík can vote in the party election. The same applies to their spouses, common-law partners and children who live with them in the country in question.
- Those who wish to be added to the electoral roll, according to this authorization, can submit a request to that effect.
- The request must be accompanied by confirmation of school attendance and a certificate of legal residence from the National Registry, you can click here and open the application.
- The Electoral Commission will accept requests of this kind until January 22 at 23:59. The request, together with confirmation of school attendance, must be sent by email to kjorstjorn.xsrvk@gmail.com.
- A request to be added to the electoral roll does not constitute registration as a member of the Social Democratic Party of Iceland. Thus, only those who were correctly registered in the party before the registration deadline, Thursday, January 22 at 23:59, will be included on the electoral roll.
- A request to be added to the electoral register in the party selection does not automatically mean that the person concerned has the right to vote in the municipal elections themselves. The National Register of Iceland processes such applications and they must be received no later than 40 days before election day.
