Leads for People and Families

The election manifesto of the Social Democratic Alliance in Norðurþing 2026-2030

1. Family First – Taking Responsibility for One Another

Regardless of your circumstances and stage of life, we aim to make everyday life easier for you. We will provide strong services for all residents—because we are stronger together.

  • No family will pay more than 50,000 ISK per month for preschool and after-school care (attendance and meal fees)—and lower-income families will pay less.
  • Restore balance between the burden on families and staff in the school system. Find a workable solution for how special registration days are implemented, in cooperation with staff and families.
  • Improve acoustics in municipal buildings.
  • Increase leisure/activity grants in stages to 50,000 ISK by the end of the term.
  • Strengthen cooperation with the Senior Council, the Disability Users’ Council, and the Youth Council. Give them a stronger voice and greater influence.
  • Use the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as a guiding principle in municipal decision-making.
  • Welcome everyone who chooses to make Norðurþing their home.

2.  A Vibrant Community

A vibrant community is a good community. Let’s make Norðurþing an even better place to live and visit all year round. Let’s nurture our local area so that we all can grow and thrive.

  • Strengthen Kópasker and Raufarhöfn as desirable destinations—prioritizing development of campsites and playgrounds.
  • Strengthen the work of neighborhood councils, for example through direct allocation of implementation funds. Give them a stronger voice and greater influence.
  • Create child-friendly, enjoyable walking routes between schools and leisure areas. Key walking routes for children should be lively and safe. Finalize the traffic safety plan.
  • Find ways to strengthen year-round tourism across the municipality in cooperation with stakeholders. Make Norðurþing an exciting destination all year round.
  • Define a future role for Hvamm, which will change with the opening of the new nursing home.
  • Support residents through community activities and thereby prevent isolation and loneliness.
  • Support a strong cultural life with events and grants for theater groups.
  • Strengthen sports and leisure activities in the community—for everyone.

3. Operations and Services

The coming years may be challenging for the municipality, and we must use that time well. We will work on job creation and set out a clear vision for what we want our municipality to become in the future.

  • Promote development at Bakki that strengthens the municipality’s finances and community life.
  • Welcome new employment opportunities and support existing businesses.
  • Air ambulance services via Húsavík Airport must be secured, and opportunities to restart scheduled flights must be explored.
  • People first. Basic services guided by residents’ needs and rights.
  • Use the term to plan in cooperation with residents. Stop putting band-aids on the wounds. Be ready with where we want to go and what we will do in the future.
  • Stand guard over the issues that make a community a good community. Often it is the small things that matter most.

4. Investments with Families at the Forefront

In municipal operations, priorities must constantly be set—weighing and assessing what is most urgent at any given time. It is necessary to look ahead and plan what lies ahead. Samfylkingin wants to prioritize investments that benefit families.

  • Prioritize the construction of playgrounds, with the school grounds of Borgarhólsskóli, Grænuvellir, Öxarfjarðarskóli, and Raufarhafnarskóli first in line. Clearly, these issues have not been a priority so far.
  • Prioritize capital funding for the benefit of families.
  • Improve and develop walking paths and outdoor recreation routes across the municipality.
  • Create maintenance plans for municipal properties. Sports facilities as a priority. These facilities are expensive to build, yet they are also among the municipality’s most-used buildings. Making the wrong decisions in these matters is costly.
  • Begin construction of the swimming pool in Lund. A priority project for families and for the area’s future opportunities.
  • Facilities for health-related services. Engage with health-service providers about developing premises. Norðurþing will build facilities with the aim of entering a long-term lease with those interested in the project. Rental income will cover the costs. In this way, we secure premises for the service into the future.
