Electoral Policy of the Social Democratic Alliance in Akranes 2026-2030
1. Family First
- Leisure activity grant for all children - We will raise the leisure activity grant for ages 5-18 to 80.000 ISK and provide a partial grant for younger children. We will continue working with ÍA to lower costs for families with children participating in a variety of sports.
- Sibling discount at preschools - We want a 100% sibling discount at preschools to reduce the costs for families with children.
- Strengthening traffic safety - We will increase the number of crosswalks and improve lighting conditions on streets and paths, especially on routes children take to and from school.
- Playgrounds - We will significantly improve the town’s playgrounds and ensure they are properly maintained. We will add more varied play structures that everyone can use. We will immediately begin construction at Merkurtún.
- Improving transport services for people with disabilities - We want to improve the quality of transport services for people with disabilities to better meet the daily needs of those requiring services.
- Short-term care stays - We will build a short-term care facility at Laugarbraut for children and young people with disabilities.
- Continuous service - We will ensure the transition of care for children with disabilities to adult care take place as smoothly as possible for both child and parents.
- Community Centre - We want to ensure modern facilities for the operational units originally intended for the Community Centre, but consult all stakeholders on future decisions.
- Accessibility in Akranes - We will improve all town facilities to ease access for people with limited mobility, with additional emphasis on road networks and walking paths that work for everyone.

- Homes for families - We want to ensure that Akranes has housing suitable for different groups, such as young people, single parents, the elderly, people with disabilities, low-income earners, and growing families. We will continue to support the development of nonprofit housing associations.
2. Akranes - A town of sports
- Children’s choice - We will work purposefully with ÍA to ensure young athletes can try a variety of sports.
- Sports for all - We will increase sports and social activities for people with disabilities.
- Future of Jaðarsbakki - We will shape the development of the sports area and its future with ÍA. We will build up the main pitch and an astroturf pitch on the training grounds.
- Jaðarsbakki pool - We will improve the facilities and recreational structures at the Jaðarsbakki pool
- New indoor swimming pool - We will take decisive action on the location and construction of the new indoor swimming pool in cooperation with all stakeholders.
- Bjarnalaug (indoor pool) - We will improve facilities and access for all at Bjarnalaug to honor its status as one of Akranes’ landmarks.
- Garðavöllur (golf course) - We will support the future expansion and development of Garðavöllur in cooperation with Leynir Golf Club.
3. The Voice of the Young People
- Strengthening social options - We will extend the opening hours of youth centres, for example by increasing summer openings and offering specific activities for different groups with varied needs.
- Creative summer jobs - We will modernize the Summer Youth Employment Program through creative employment opportunities.
- Prevention - Sports activities, youth centres and other organized activities play a key role in risk prevention among young people. We will professionally improve prevention efforts to catch those who need help.
- Strong and integrated efforts - We will systematically combat bullying and social isolation, emphasising education and empathy in youth centres and leisure activities in cooperation with parents and child care professionals.
- Voice of the young people - We will empower youth democracy in Akranes. We will listen to voices of the young and address the projects they prioritize in their town.
4. A School Community at the Forefront
- Child-to-staff ratio - We will raise the child-to-staff ratio by 0.2 per department and improve working conditions with the aim of reducing stress and pressure both on children and staff.
- Incorporate preschools into law - We will work with the government to secure reliable funding for the preschool level and legislate children’s right to preschool enrollment, with the aim of bridging the gap between parental leave and preschool.
- New preschool in Neðri-Skagi - We will begin construction on a new preschool in Neðri-Skagi.
- Support in schools - We will strengthen early support in preschools and increase access to specialists such as special education teaches, psychologists, and speecth therapists in all our schools.
- The next primary school - We will begin preparations for a third primary school in cooperation with the school community.
- School grounds - We will improve and maintain the grounds of all primary schools.
- Icelandic language lessons - We will increase Icelandic language teaching for children with a mother tongue other than Icelandic and envision cooperation between primary schools in this regard.
5. The People Who Built This Country
- Höfði Senior Care Home - We will complete the planned expansion of Höfði in cooperation with the government.
- Good to grow old - We will ensure seniors receive continuous services that meet individual needs and support independence.
- Taking responsibility for one another - We will fight isolation and loneliness among seniors through organized social activities.
- Senior rehabilitation - Daily training aims to maintain function, improve quality of life and support independent living. We will find ways to improve access to services and training in cooperation with Höfði.
A Living Town
- Cultural Centre - We will strengthen artistic creation, community and cultural participation in town. We will secure premises to serve as a cultural hub in Akranes, in cooperation with the government.
- The coastline - We will enhance the coastal experience by connecting the coastal path along the entire shoreline of Akranes with rest stops and ensured access to all the town’s natural treasures.
- Beautifying the town - We will increase greenery in town. Add more artworks, play structures, benches and fitness facilities for residents of all ages.
- Strengthening the town center - We will look at Akratorg (town square) as the focal point of community life and culture with the arrival of a new hotel, the renewal of Kirkjubraut and the development of the Cement Factory lot.
- Culture and the arts - We will improve facilities and opportunities for cultural events in the town, for example in the music school and library.
7. A Future for People and Businesses
- Water and energy - We will ensure that the promises of Veitur and Landsnet to expand the water supply and increase the electricity supply are fulfilled.
- Akranes harbour - We will expand the area of operations at Akranes harbour. We will work with Faxaflóahafnir to improve facilities for launching vessels and encourage maritime business to grow and thrive in Akranes.
- Business services - We will revitalize the business environment with simplified regulations and clear communications with from administrative bodies, with the aim of speeding up processing times without compromising best practices.
- Dialogue with the business community - We want to promote a forum for consultation between business and local authorities
- Operations of the West Iceland Health Institute - The hospital in Akranes needs more space. By relocating the health centre in cooperation with the government, access and services for residents can be improved.
- Breið area - We want to continue and complete planning work at the Breið area.
- Promoting Akranes - We will strengthen the town’s promotional efforts in tourism and create conditions to support tourism business in town. We will set up an Instagram frame at one of the town’s landmarks.
- The Skagi Pass - We will launch the Skagi Pass, which provides discounts on admission to museums, swimming pools and events for visitors.
- Labour market participation - We want the town to set a good example and offer diverse employment for people with reduced work capacity.
8. Governance and Services
- Responsible governance - We prioritize fiscally positive and efficient governance, ensuring every króna is fully utilized in the service of residents.
- Important asset management - Akranes benefits from holding stakes in major infrastructure providers Orkuveitan and Faxaflóahafnir. Those assets will never be sold out of public ownership under our leadership.
- Road and path maintenance - We want to start an initiative to repair and maintain the town’s roads, sidewalks and paths. Planned works will be clearly communicated to residents.
- Town properties - It is necessary to steadily and consistently maintain the town’s real estate facilities to minimize maintenance costs.
- Service hub - We will consolidate the town’s administrative offices in one location and work with the government to secure locations for the health centre, the Natural History Institute, the district commissioner’s office, and other specialist services in the same building.
- Facilities for emergency services - We will ensure adequate working facilities for the fire department, ambulance service and local search & rescue teams in town.
- Area planning north of Hvalfjörður - We will work together with neighbouring municipalities on regional planning north of Hvalfjörður. We will strengthen cooperation with our neighbours and seize mutually beneficial opportunities.
